Best Cannabinoids to Take With Your Morning Coffee

By Danyal Swan August 22, 2022

Do you find yourself dragging if you don’t get your morning cup of joe? You’re not alone - this writer, herself, needs a cup or two to start the day. Caffeine is the most widely consumed drug in the world, and it is prevalent in coffee, which many drink to achieve their daily intake of caffeine. The different benefits of coffee are well documented, and the caffeine in coffee helps to improve focus and alertness, and can even promote brain health.

While caffeine has several benefits, it can also produce some negative effects — from feeling jittery and having heart palpitations to troubles sleeping. One way to maintain the benefits of drinking coffee without the less appetizing side effects is to introduce cannabinoids with your morning coffee. Is it ok to couple CBD with coffee? The answer is a definite yes! There are several cannabinoids that have proven beneficial when added to your morning cup of coffee.

What Are Some Different Ways to Ingest THC and CBD?

Before jumping right into coffee, it is beneficial to understand the different ways that THC and CBD can be ingested to help you determine the best method of use for your unique needs.

Inhalation

One of the most common methods of cannabis use is inhalation, whether by smoking cannabis flower, vaping cannabis oil, or dabbing cannabis concentrates. This method allows you to experience effects quickly, but can be more difficult to control dosage.

Soft Chew Edibles and Capsules

This option of ingestion is convenient as the soft chew gummy or capsule is in precisely measured doses. The main drawback of this option, or edibles in general, is that you have to wait for the cannabinoids to be digested. This can sometimes take up to an hour, which can offset the ability of the caffeine and cannabinoids to work together in harmony. It’s important to note that digestion also converts THC to a more psychoactive sister cannabinoid, 11-hydroxy THC, so ensure to start with a low dose when using this route.

Tinctures

Tinctures are the easiest method for anyone who wants to experiment with adding cannabinoids to their coffee. This is because encapsulated tinctures can simply be added directly to the coffee mug. Tinctures are a liquid form of cannabis that is commonly stored in a glass container with a dropper, allowing you to have complete control over dosage.

While encapsulated tinctures may be added directly to beverages, oil-based tinctures cannot. Tinctures made with coconut oil or others need to be infused into a simple syrup or other carrier.

Cannabinoids and Coffee

Cannabinoids and coffee pair together perfectly when dosed correctly. The trick is understanding your own tolerance and the desired effects that you want to experience, which is why tinctures are often the easiest method when it comes to ingesting cannabis with your morning coffee. It is always best to start small and work your way up to your desired level.

Once you find your optimal dose, there are several different reasons why cannabinoids and coffee are commonly paired together.

Cannabinoids Can Reduce Negative Effects of Caffeine

One reason people enjoy this pairing is to help offset some of the less desirable side effects of caffeine. Caffeine can help improve focus and creativity, but it can also cause levels of anxiety in drinkers, causing jittery feelings, or the inability to focus. Too, caffeine can cause insomnia, making it difficult to fall asleep at night – inability to get a full night’s rest can greatly affect a person’s entire day. Caffeine has shown to cause digestive problems, making a healthy intake imperative.

Cannabinoids can soften these harsher side effects of caffeine. It is common for patients to report that adding cannabinoids to their regular coffee routine helped to offset feelings of anxiety. Cannabinoids have been known to reduce anxiety, helping to better achieve a lasting level of calmness. The ability to stay calm allows a person to stay focused. Cannabinoids can aid in relaxation, which makes falling asleep at night easier. Cannabinoids have also been shown to help with digestive issues, providing an opposite effect to the unwanted side effects of caffeine.

Cannabinoids Can Improve Focus and Concentration

Many patients use cannabinoids to further increase the benefits of improved focus that caffeine can provide. There are several different cannabinoids that have shown the ability to increase focus and creativity, THC, CBD and CBG to name a few.

Pairing two substances with similar effects are called agonistic interaction. This interaction can give a perfect concentration boost for days when the ability to focus is vital.

Caffeine Can Mitigate Side Effects of Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids have a wide variety of effects. Some provide a boost of energy, creativity, and focus. Others help to aid in relaxation, reduce anxiety, and help relieve chronic pain. For patients who take cannabinoids to manage chronic pain, coffee can help counteract the side effect of feeling sleepy that certain cannabinoids can create.

The Science Behind Caffeine and Cannabis

Does caffeine affect the endocannabinoid system? It does, which is why caffeine and cannabinoids pair so well together. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system by blocking neurotransmitters in your brain that are responsible for making you feel sleepy or lose focus. Caffeine interacts with chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline that are responsible for elevating your blood pressure and boosting your energy level.

This interaction can cause feelings of power and euphoria. The way that cannabinoids work in the body is quite similar. Cannabinoids bind to different receptors in the endocannabinoid system. This interaction produces responses based on the characteristics of the different cannabis consumed. This can help to increase feelings of creativity and energy when working together.

Understanding Cannabinoids

Hundreds of different cannabinoids exist naturally within the cannabis plant. These cannabinoids are responsible for the way cannabis looks, tastes, smells, and is experienced. There are certain cannabinoids that are more prevalent than others when it comes to different cannabis strains. Understanding cannabinoids can help a patient better control the effects they experience when using cannabis for medical purposes.

THC

This cannabinoid is accredited with the psychoactive effects of cannabis. This is the euphoric high that is commonly associated with cannabis use. This helps elevate feelings of pleasure, creativity, and focus. When considering your morning coffee, you’ll want to consider how much THC, if any, you want present. When pairing cannabinoids with coffee, most patients are seeking an added boost of focus. Too much THC can create a euphoric high that can ultimately end up being more distracting in situations where focus is key.

CBD

CBD is another well-known cannabinoid. This cannabinoid differs from THC in that it does not produce a psychoactive effect. Since CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect, it is a popular option for patients who want the simple medical benefits of cannabis. CBD is the perfect cannabinoid for offsetting some of the lesser desired effects of caffeine. CBD has been shown to help manage anxiety and promote feelings of calm. CBD can also help aid in digestive issues that can be caused by caffeine.

CBG

This cannabinoid is known as the productivity cannabinoid. It provides a distinct benefit when it comes to focusing, making it a key cannabinoid to look for when seeking focused effects. When combined with coffee, it can help take attention and focus to the next level.

Importance Of Dosage

Pairing coffee with cannabis is a great way to increase focus levels. Pairing these two also helps to reduce or remove any undesired side effects such as anxiety, stomach issues, or feelings of jitters. When deciding to give cannabis and coffee a try, it is best to start slow. That is why using a tincture can be beneficial.

Tinctures allow you to clearly see how much of a dose you are adding to your morning coffee. You should also start small. It is better to ultimately enjoy a regular cup of coffee than find yourself unable to seize the day because you ingested too much. Over time, you can adjust your dosage levels until you achieve your desired boost of energy and focus.

Terpenes and Focus

A few cannabinoids have shown to enhance cognitive abilities such as focus – but so, too, have terpenes.

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds in all living plants, including cannabis. These compounds are used in aromatherapy and are what provide cannabis’s scent, flavor, and even some of its preferred effects. Focus and energy boosts are common with terpenes, including:

  • Limonene: shown to elevate mood, quell anxiety and depression, and boost focus and energy
  • Pinene: shown to increase energy, focus and concentration, in addition to its anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Caryophyllene: shown to be neuroprotective; increases clarity and cognition, in addition to its anti-inflammatory properties

Ways To Enjoy Cannabis and Coffee

Infused drink recipes are a popular method of enjoying any type of beverage with cannabis. Not only does this include your morning cup of coffee, but you can also use cannabis in your cup of tea, juice or even to create fun and festive mocktails. You can infuse almost any common recipe, allowing you to be creative and enjoy your cannabis in a new and exciting way.

For those who prefer to leave the infusing to the dispensary operators, smoking your favorite cannabis flower while sipping your coffee is another popular way to pair the two, or even by eating an edible with your cuppa. There is no real wrong way to pair your coffee with your cannabis – it is ultimately a personal experience that may take some experimenting to determine what will work best for you.

Cannabinoids and Coffee

If you have not experienced the benefits of pairing coffee with cannabis, now is a perfect time. Caffeine, cannabinoids and even terpenes work together within your endocannabinoid system to boost focus and concentration. They pair well when it comes to canceling out some of the lesser desired side effects of both caffeine and cannabis. When dosed correctly, you can enjoy an added boost to your morning routine without the fear of developing the jitters or experiencing anxiety.
