Why Voting Yes on Amendment 3 is Smart & Safe for Florida

By MÜV Team August 1, 2024

The countdown to the November election is on, and with it comes a crucial decision for the voters of Florida. Amendment 3, known as the Adult Personal Use of Marijuana Initiative, which advocates for safe and regulated adult use cannabis, has garnered significant momentum.

Roughly 1 million Floridians joined the signature campaign to put the issue on November’s ballot, and with the opportunity to say yes to legal adult use cannabis this election and a 60% majority of the vote needed to pass, now is a pivotal moment to bring attention to this cause to ensure a passing success. Let's delve into why a 'Yes' vote on Amendment 3 is not just beneficial but imperative for Florida's future.

Dispelling Misconceptions:

Opponents of Amendment 3 have raised concerns about the implications of adult use cannabis, but let's address these misconceptions head-on.

Regulation Misconception:

One argument suggested is that the passage of Amendment 3 would prevent and hinder the regulation of marijuana use, particularly in public places. However, this is far from the truth.

The amendment does not impede the legislature's ability to regulate public cannabis consumption, and further, public cannabis consumption is not permitted. Just as with alcohol and tobacco, regulations can help ensure clean and family-friendly public places remain in the Sunshine State.

Safety Concerns:

There are fears surrounding the safety of cannabis products, with opponents citing the risk of contamination with dangerous substances like fentanyl. Yet, the reality is quite the opposite. A legal and regulated market ensures rigorous testing and proper labeling of cannabis products, safeguarding consumers from harmful substances and illegal pesticides.

Each product sold in a dispensary requires third-party independent laboratory testing to conduct random-sample testing of cannabis before any product can be brought to market and is backed by a Certificate of Analysis verifying it has met quality assurance testing.

Economic Impact:

Some argue that legalization would harm Florida's economy and tourism industry. On the contrary, legal cannabis presents another opportunity for job creation, economic growth, and substantial tax revenue. Drawing from the experiences of other states, legalizing cannabis could yield significant tax revenue, benefiting the community as a whole without deterring tourism.

With over 20 million residents and a booming tourism industry of nearly 120 million annual visitors, Florida has the opportunity to become one of the largest legal cannabis markets with the implementation of Amendment 3.

Universal Support:

Both cannabis and Amendment 3 transcend political divides, garnering support from diverse demographics across both the United States and Florida. According to Pew Research, nearly 88% of U.S. adults across the political spectrum say cannabis should be legal for medical and recreational use, further recognizing the wide acceptance of this plant, regardless of political affiliation.

Additionally, Amendment 3 has also received statewide support from Florida’s veteran community. To-date, over 600 veterans have joined the Smart and Safe Florida coalition to help in advocating to bring safe regulated cannabis to those who have sacrificed for our country, and are unable to receive medically from the VA.
