On The Rocks: Live Rosin, Elevated

By Danyal Swan August 21, 2023

Concentrates are a coveted form of cannabis because they are just as they sound – concentrated forms of the plant, though none are more desirable than live rosin. The desired components, THC, CBD, minor cannabinoids, and even terpenes, are extracted, typically using a solvent. The most common solvents are ethanol, BHO or butane and, after extraction, require burning off. The finalized cannabis concentrates are typically formats you know, shatter, crumble, and distillate.

But what about cannabis concentrates that don’t use solvents?

Meet On The Rocks small-batch solventless extracts, your potent dose of fresh-frozen cannabinoids and terpenes, available at a MÜV Dispensary near you.

On The Rocks Small-Batch Solventless Extracts

On The Rocks solventless concentrates combine ancient extraction methods with modern cannabis artistry. Potent and aromatic medical marijuana is brought to life by harnessing the power of trichomes – the rich storehouses of cannabinoids and terpenes – preserving the true essence of each strain. Crafted meticulously by hand in small batches, every product represents the plant's most genuine form. With On The Rocks, there's no room for solvents or fillers – it's pure, unadulterated cannabis.

Each On The Rocks option is extracted using ice water extraction, a method that isolates trichomes with ease, leaving behind unwanted plant matter. The result? Pure plant power, in forms:

A Brief History Of Hash and Rosin

Believe it or not, the first marijuana concentrates were created over a thousand years ago. Hashish, as it's described in the text 1001 Arabian Nights, was created by rubbing the marijuana flower between your fingers to isolate trichomes (or the very tiny mushroom-shaped hairs that give bud its frosty appearance) in a little ball, which was typically eaten. Hash permeated through the Middle East, particularly in Sufism, in which it was used to get closer to God. In fact, historians believe a poet from the 13th century AD wrote these words about hashish:

It is the secret. In it, the spirit ascends to the highest
Spots on a heavenly ascent (mira’j) of disembodied understanding

It found its place, too, in Europe - but for medicinal reasons. William B. O’Shaughnessy, an Irish physician practicing in India, is now considered a pioneer in medical marijuana research. He found the use of the plant and its form as hashish was a successful anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea aid.

From Marijuana Hash to Rosin to Live Rosin

Live Rosin Press

We now know that pressing and rubbing cannabis flower between your fingers gathers the trichomes of the plant, in which THC, CBD, flavonoids and terpenes are produced. In recent years, the method of achieving hash has changed greatly.

Instead of rubbing flower between your hands or fingers, marijuana product manufacturers have refined the process of isolating trichomes using either dry sift or ice water methods (more on that in a moment).

The trichomes are then loaded into bags for a special process. Heat and pressure are applied, known as pressing, to create hash rosin or rosin, a potent, solventless concentrate. Rosin is considered a full spectrum product, as there is minimal degradation of the terpene profile and cannabinoids.

Dry Sift Extraction vs. Ice Water Extraction

Dry sift and ice water, as you can guess from the names, are vastly different extraction methods.

In the case of dry sift rosin, dried and cured cannabis flower is sifted on mesh sieves to break off the trichomes. These trichomes are sifted through mesh screens that cascade down in size to further isolate the mushroom shaped hairs – because the trichomes are removed from dry flower, there’s a high chance of bringing unwanted plant material (think of trying to remove a sticker from a piece of paper – it's hard to not bring paper with it). After the trichomes are removed, they are pressed using only heat and pressure to produce a malleable texture similar to slightly dry cookie dough.

Ice water extraction, on the other hand, gives the flower a bath.

No, really!

The flower is submerged into an ice water bath to thoroughly soak it, then is stirred or shaken. Because the flower is wet, and due to the presence of ice, the agitation of the bud breaks the frozen trichomes off without bringing plant leaves with them. This slurry is then dried into what’s known as bubble hash, a more refined form of hash. Bubble hash is then pressed using only heat and pressure to produce a concentrate similar to moist cookie dough.

Bubble hash is considered the highest grade of hash or rosin, and is typically a very light cream, tan or golden. Hash rosin ranges from light tan to deep, likely due to plant matter making its way into the final product.

Live Rosin and Solventless FAQs

From ice water extraction to living terpene profiles – it's a lot of information about one concentrate! If your head is spinning, don’t fret – we've compiled some of the top asked questions about MÜV Live Ice Water Extract Rosin, including how to store it:

What Is Live Rosin?

Live rosin is the pinnacle of cannabis concentrates. Cannabis flower is harvested and immediately frozen to retain the plant's living terpene profile. Trichomes are isolated from the flash-frozen whole flower using ice water extraction, which effectively removes the resinous trichomes without bringing undesirable plant material with them. These trichomes are dried, then pressed using only heat and pressure. The result is a solventless, full-spectrum concentrate with the full aroma, flavor, and terpene profile of the cannabis strain extracted.

Rosin vs. Live Rosin – What's The Difference?

Live Rosin is a special form of the concentrate. Instead of using dried and cured bud, the marijuana flower is frozen immediately after harvest. This is a key differentiator due to the volatility of terpenes – some activate at such low temperatures, that even the change in temperature from harvest to drying can cause them to degrade in quantity.

Freezing the flower, instead, retains the plant's living profile, hence the descriptor “live.”

Is Rosin The Same As Bubble Hash Rosin?

The term bubble hash is an indication of the extraction process and the way in which the concentrate bubbles as it is heated. In this case, On The Rocks rosin extracts are considered bubble hash.

Are On The Rocks Products Full Spectrum?

Yes, live rosin badder, coins, and cartridges are full spectrum products. Because the cannabis strain is flash-frozen immediately after harvest, the chemical fingerprint of the plant is still intact on the harvested flower. This allows for the majority of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids to make their way into the final Live Rosin product, providing the full entourage effect.

Why Does Live Rosin Occur In Different Shades?

Live rosin badder and coins can appear different shades of light golden, cream, or tan due to the terpene profile of the strain extracted. If it is stored improperly, it will deepen in color.

How Should Live Rosin Be Stored?

Live rosin coins, badder, and cartridges should be stored in a cool, dark place. If you tend to keep your home warm, it is recommended to place Live Rosin in the refrigerator.

How Do You Consume Live Rosin?

Using Cannabis Live Rosin

Live rosin coins and batter are best consumed with a concentrate vaporizer device, also known as dabbing, such as the Boundless Terp Pen or Puffco Plus. Concentrate vaporizers have the capacity to heat live rosin to the temperature necessary to activate cannabinoids for potent relief.

If you prefer to consume your concentrates with flower, try adding your live rosin in layers. This will help ensure it does not burn prior to your inhaling to receive all of the benefits this extract has to offer.

Why Is Live Rosin More Expensive Than Other Concentrates?

Live rosin, live rosin badder, and live rosin cartridges are higher due to three key production points:

First, the plant is flash-frozen prior to extracting trichomes. This preserves the living chemical profile of the plant, including cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. The resulting product after trichomes are pressed smells and tastes just like the flower it was extracted from.

Second, we use ice water extraction to create what is referred to as bubble hash. IWE removes the trichomes from whole, wet flower. Because the flower is wet, the trichomes are removed without the potential of bringing plant material with them, resulting in a pure, stable product.

Finally, the use of whole flower for concentrates is known as nug run. Nug run concentrates are known to produce higher quality product due to the use of high quality, whole flower, as opposed to flower that is a byproduct from harvest.

Why is Live Rosin Hard To Find?

Live rosin, and rosin in general, are rather hard products to produce due to the amount of flower it takes to collect the trichomes to press.
