Everything You Need to Know About Cannabis Rolling Papers

By Brittiany Ralls November 25, 2022

While there are countless ways to consume cannabis today, the classic joint is a familiar option known by many—even those who don’t partake. In fact, the cannabis joint has a unique culture and a special place in history in and of itself and has long been the established method of cannabis use. That’s why, even with the many options now available on the market, the joint continues to be a popular option for patients who rely on cannabis for medicinal relief.

Choosing Your Cannabis Rolling Papers: All About Fibers

A great place to start when it comes to understanding the difference in the various types of cannabis rolling papers on the market are the fibers used to create the papers. These fibers can play a role in how thick the paper is, how quickly the resulting joint will burn, and the overall texture and flavor of the experience.

Hemp

Hemp paper has proven itself versatile across numerous industries and a variety of products. Since hemp is cannabis itself, you can’t go wrong using hemp as your choice of rolling papers. Hemp paper is also a preferred option because it is thin, sturdy, and easy to roll compared to other paper fibers. This makes it an excellent choice for those who are new to the art of rolling. Hemp paper has a mild natural flavor, which means it won’t take away from the flavor of the terpenes within your favorite cannabis flower.

Wood Pulp

Wood pulp fibers are the most used fibers for cannabis rolling papers. This is largely due to how easy they are to work with while still providing dependable stability for a sturdy roll. Using wood pulp is the easiest type of paper to use for beginners, because it is quick and easy to roll. However, keep in mind that wood pulp tends to burn fast, meaning that your joint may end up burning more quickly or unevenly than you want.

Flax

Flax cannabis rolling papers are a great option for beginners and experienced rollers alike. Flax papers are relatively thin and easy to roll. This type of fiber is also less combustible, which means you won’t have to worry about your joint burning too hot or too fast to enjoy.

Rice

Rice cannabis rolling papers can be difficult for someone who is new to rolling. However, once you have your technique down, rice can be a great option. Rice paper is ultra-thin and is also slow burning. This is a perfect combination for individuals who want to fully enjoy the flavor of their cannabis with minimal paper coverage.

Fiber Blends

As you can see, there are numerous benefits and disadvantages when it comes to each of the different fiber options. That is why many cannabis patients prefer to use a fiber blend cannabis rolling paper. A blend takes the best of two or more distinct types of fibers, providing an enjoyable experience that melds ease and longevity. For example, Zig-Zag is a popular brand known by many cannabis patients. Zig-Zag is known for providing top-of-the-line fiber blends, including wood pulp mixed with other natural plant fibers. This provides a slow, even burn as well as ease in constructing the joint itself.

What is the Difference Between Bleached and Unbleached Papers?

If you continue to examine the different cannabis rolling paper options, you’ll notice that many packages will indicate whether the paper is bleached or unbleached. There is debate concerning the varied health benefits of the different types, but the true difference between the two lies in color.

Bleached paper does not mean that bleach was used in the creation of the paper. White, or “bleached” papers use an oxygenation process that ensures no residue is left on the paper. Unbleached means that this process was skipped, so the paper will have natural hues of the fibers used to create the paper.

When it comes down to choosing between bleached or unbleached cannabis rolling papers, it comes down to personal preference. You won’t experience much of a difference when it comes to ease of use, burn time, or thickness. The only noticeable difference will be the color.

Cannabis Rolling Paper Adhesives

You’ll need your joint to hold together once loaded with your chosen cannabis and rolled tightly. To aid in this process, most cannabis rolling papers come with a built-in adhesive. However, what is used to create this adhesive can vary, so it is beneficial to look over the ingredients list if you are concerned about any specific chemicals.

Most reputable cannabis rolling paper companies rely on natural adhesives such as gum Arabic adhesive, which is used on postage stamps. Others utilize natural options such as glue made from sugar.

Branching Out from the Norm

Cannabis rolling papers can come in a variety of novelty flavors and styles to accommodate cannabis patients who love to experiment with something new and different. Flavors vary drastically between the various brands and varieties, but typically focus on fruity flavors.

While it can be fun to experiment with several types of papers, many experts advise practicing caution with novelty cannabis rolling papers. These papers can have a higher level of contaminants, including pesticides or lead. If you want to try something different, be sure to select trusted brands.

Size

Once you know what kind of papers you want and whether you prefer bleached or unbleached, your next important decision is regarding the size of the paper. Cannabis rolling papers are available in a variety of sizes to meet any need, but there are five common sizes you’ll see most anywhere you purchase cannabis accessories.

Single

As you might suspect, this size is ideal for one joint for a single user. This option may be difficult to work with at first due to its smaller size.

1 1/4

This is one of the most popular sizes purchased by cannabis patients. When the joint is complete, it is similar to the size of a standard cigarette.

1 1/2

This option is slightly larger than the 1 ¼ rolling paper size. This size may be a bit large for individual use but is ideal for sharing with fellow cannabis patients. You can always smother the cherry of the joint and save the rest for a later time.

Double

This option isn’t as popular as the smaller sizes, but it could be a suitable place to start for an individual new to rolling. The larger size provides better wiggle room when it comes to learning how to best hold and roll the papers. One downside is that if rolled incorrectly, you’ll end up burning a great deal of paper in addition to your cannabis. Double sizes also tend to be more expensive and aren’t practical for individual use.

King

This super-size paper option is easier to handle than smaller-size papers but isn’t ideal for individual medical use.

Tips for Rolling

Rolling cannabis paper for joints can be a bit frustrating at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll love having another convenient method for cannabis consumption. The best advice is to be patient with yourself, give yourself plenty of room, and don’t get discouraged if it takes some time.

  1. Before you start rolling, make sure that you have a flat surface such as a table or rolling tray. You’ll want to have your chosen papers ready, as well as your cannabis flower.
  2. Grinding your flower is the best way to ensure you can lay it out smoothly and roll it tight without fear of ripping your paper.
  3. When you are ready to begin, take out a piece of your cannabis rolling paper, and lay it flat on your tray with the adhesive side up and facing away from you.
  4. Sprinkle your chosen cannabis along the middle of the paper lengthwise, leaving room at both ends.
  5. Take the side closest to you (the one without adhesive) and fold it slightly over the bud.
  6. Now, it is time to start rolling. Take your time, and don’t be discouraged if you lose some bud along the way—a tray is useful for collecting the excess.
  7. When you’re done rolling, gently lick the adhesive end and press it against the rolled paper.
  8. Twist the end to prevent further flower loss.
  9. You are ready to enjoy!

Some patients prefer to include a filter in their joints. This could be a simple strip of cardboard that is rolled and placed at the end of the cannabis rolling paper. Others simply flatten the end against the rolled bud to make a compact fit. As with anything else cannabis, your ideal joint comes down to personal preference. Of course, there are other methods and additional tips for smoking cannabis.

Convenient Options

If you don’t have the time to spare, consider using a cone. Paper cones are a perfect solution when time is short, or you simply don’t want to put in a lot of effort. You’ll simply load up the cone and twist the end.

You can also purchase an inexpensive rolling device. These devices are often used for rolling tobacco cigarettes but provide the same ease and convenience with cannabis.

Some dispensaries offer cannabis flower pre-rolls, which is a very convenient option for those who don’t want to attempt rolling themselves.
