Reasons and Recipes to Celebrate 420 in 2023

By Danyal Swan April 14, 2023

To some, the number is pronounced four hundred twenty, but to cannabis aficionados across the US and around the world, 420 is just that: four twenty. As we roll up on this year's 4/20 date, many people new to cannabis are wondering: where did 420 come from? It's time to learn some history about cannabis' most significant number and then discuss some celebration tips and recipe ideas.

420 Origins

Before we dive into the 420 goods, it’s worth exploring where the number came from.

While many people recognize 420 as the ideal day to celebrate cannabis, fewer people know of its 420’s true origins. In fact, ask ten people where 420 came from, and you'll likely get a variety of answers ranging from police code for marijuana to Hitler's birthday. However, none of them are true. Instead, the term almost certainly originated with five high school students in the 1970s who were wild about "safaris.”

The year was 1971, and the Waldos would often sit on a wall outside their high school near what is now Silicon Valley, smoking marijuana while poking fun at their fellow classmates and teachers to pass the time. The wall is how they earned their moniker, but it's what they did after they left the wall where the legend began. Always wanting to challenge each other to try something new, the Waldos would plan adventures, called safaris, to find new experiences - one of which was finding a supposed forgotten crop of weed. Did they every find it?

Just like the Waldos, today’s cannabis consumers are creating experiences of their own around the plant year-round, but especially on 4/20.

Directions:

  1. Leave the skins on the baking potatoes and boil them in salted water for about 15 - 20 minutes.
  2. Remove them from the water, and while still hot, take the skins off. Mash or sieve the potatoes to remove any lumps.
  3. Combine the oil, egg, flour, and salt with the potatoes. Combine together with a spoon until all ingredients are incorporated.
  4. Sprinkle flour onto a large board or a clean countertop and knead the mixture until it turns into a dough.

  6. Dust all the pieces with additional flour before cooking.
  7. Boil salted water and add the pieces to the pot. When they float to the top, they’re done.
  8. Remove from the water.
  9. In a small pan, melt the cannabutter. You can add garlic and Italian seasoning at this time if desired.
  10. Place the gnocchi on a plate, drizzle with the butter, then top with a few sprinkles of cheese.
  11. Serve.
